  2. Young male turkeys are called jakes, young female turkeys are called jennies, adult male turkeys are called gobblers, and adult female turkeys are called hens.
  3. Studies say that the snood length of the male turkey depends on its health. However, both male and female turkeys have snood.
  4. You can identify the sex of a turkey by its poop! Yes, you read it right. Male turkey droppings are j-shaped and female droppings are spiral-shaped.
  5. The wild turkey can run at 25 miles per hour and fly at 55mph over short distances. They are also capable of swimming and running.
  6. Male turkeys will work together to attract a female turkey just for only one member of their group to mate.
  7. Every year, more than 250 million turkeys are raised and killed for meat in the United States. Nearly 40 million turkeys are eaten at Thanksgiving each year in the United States.

  9. Adult turkeys have 5000 to 6000 feathers and 18 tail feathers.
  10. There is a popular misconception that Benjamin Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the national bird of the U.S. instead of the eagle. It is a myth! This story started when Franklin wrote a letter to his daughter Sarah stating that he didn’t like bald eagles to represent the U.S. because of their bad moral character.
