History of Independence Day Celebrations

One year after independence, America celebrated the fourth of July with speeches, parades in Philadelphia. Harbor ships were decorated in red, blue and white. Also, the former 13 colonies commemorated the day by firing 13 cannonballs and fireworks in the sky.

Fireworks

Americans proudly shot fireworks on the night of 4th July. The Continental Congress adopted fireworks as a part of the celebration in 1776. During Independence Day, fireworks take place in many states. People love watching them from the beach, lake, park or backyard. The fireworks are accompanied by patriotic songs including the national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America,”“Columbia the Gem of the Ocean,” and “America the Beautiful.”

Parades

The United States’ National Independence Day Parade is held at 11.45 AM in Washington, D.C on Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th street. Thousands of spectators watch the parade. At present, many cities and towns throw parades on the fourth of July.

Barbecues

Independence Day won’t be complete without barbecues in the United States. The barbecue is well suited for special occasions. People love celebrating eating American food with their friends and family. Barbecue brings families and friends together. Along with barbecues, the feast includes burgers, pasta salads, hotdogs, chips galore and more. Americans invite their friends, family and neighbours to their backyard barbecue parties during this day.

Baseball

Baseball is known as one of the favorite sports in the United States. Hence it is incorporated into Independence. People spend time playing baseball on this day. They find this simple activity more relaxing.

Bonfire

The night before Independence Day people gather around to make a bonfire. Salem, Massachusetts holds the record of making the tallest bonfires ever.

Hang the American Flag

US military bases celebrate the fourth of July with a gun salute in the afternoon which is called the “salute to the Union.” Troops fire one shot in every state of the US. Almost all neighbourhoods hang the flag.

Wear Red, White and Blue

People decked out in red, white and blue to celebrate their independence. Some people wear make-up on the Fourth of July.
