The System

Canada is a parliamentary democracy. Monday’s vote will determine the 338 seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of parliament. To win a majority of seats, a party requires 170 seats.

The Parties

Here is the list of the parties in Canada

  • Liberal Party
  • Conservative Party
  • New Democratic Party
  • Bloc Quebecois
  • Green Party
  • People’s Party

Important Things to Note Before Monday’s Vote

  • Among 27 million eligible voters, about 6 million people have already voted during the four days of advance election polls. Another 1.2 million got special ballots to vote by mail or at Elections Canada offices, meaning around 20 million eligible voters need to visit their local polling stations to vote on Monday.
  • People who asked for a special ballot are not permitted to vote in person, with a few exceptions. People who didn’t return their special ballots can give them on Monday at their local polling stations, or even someone can do it for them. People who haven’t received a requested ballot or lost it can swear an oath at their local polling station; only then can they vote. Anyone who tried to vote more than once may go to jail. Outer envelopes have mail-in ballots; hence officials can easily come to know if anyone swearing is telling the truth or not. If someone breaks the rule, the postal ballot will not be counted. Canada election urges people with Covid-19 to stay home.
  • Ballots cast in the advance polls, some special ballots(people who mailed or dropped off at Election Canada offices) will be counted Monday night along with Monday in-person votes.
  • People who mailed or dropped off at Elections Canada offices during the most special ballots will not be counted on Monday. Canada Elections warned it might take up to five days to complete.
  • Both Liberals and Conservatives gained almost equal votes. Hence, it can’t be predicted until all 338 ridings are finalized.
