1867 – on this day, the International Exhibition was inaugurated in Paris. 

1868 – The Hampton Institute was founded in Virginia.

1873 – Atlantic was a British White steamship that sank off Nova Scotia and 547 people died.

1889 – The dishwashing machine was marketed in Chicago.

1891 – The telephone connection between London and Paris was launched.

1916 – The first women’s swimming championships were held in the United States.

1918 – England’s new Royal Air Force was introduced by replacing the Royal Flying Corps.
