Everything You Must Know about the World’s First 3D Printed Rocket

3D printing

Three-dimensional (3D) is an extra manufacturing process that designs a physical object from a digital design. It processes by depositing the thin layers of material in liquid or powdered plastic, metal, or cement and then combing the layers together. Industries producing three-dimensional printings are hearing-aid manufacturers, Airline manufacturers, and car manufacturers, using 3D printing technology to create a pattern and multitude of their production with scans.

Revolutionary breakthrough: World’s first 3D printed rocket

Relativity Space a California-based startup Aerospace company launched the first two-stage expendable 3D-printed rocket, Terran 1.  The mission was named “ Good luck, have fun”. According to Relative Space, it was not carrying any satellites, but in the future, it will carry satellites.

Previous month two launches priorly attempted. Some issues such as cooling the propellent, fuel pressure problems,  and weather conditions prevented the launch.

Who made the first 3D-printed Rocket?
  • A. NASA
  • B. Relativity space
  • C. Rocket lab
  • D. SpaceX

Terran 1 was crafted to carry a maximum payload of 2,760 pounds i.e 1,520 kg to lower earth orbit at 115 miles i.e (185 km). It was estimated that it would carry up to 2000 pounds(900 kg) to higher sun-synchronous orbits.

To their astonishment, 85% of the rocket was printed, and the spacecraft company stated it could build launch vehicles.

The Terran 1 takeoff booster lifted off from Cape Canaveral space force station. However unfortunately the rocket “ Good Luck, have fun” faced an anomaly in the second stage after launch and fell short of the mission before reaching orbit.

Advantages and challenges of 3D printing technology in rocket

An assemblage of Metal alloys intended specifically for 3D printing Rocketship frames.

The team used simple manufacturing to assemble the TERRAN 1. With the collaboration of the latest designs and advanced technology, the Rocket is fewer than the typical one.

According to Relativity Space, the Rocket can be assembled in 60 days and the competitor could build a Rocket in between one and two years. Since the spacecraft are designed using 3D printers it got easier to test the range of versions.

The biggest advantage of 3D printing Rocket bodies are it is easy to reiterate the process.

A 3D printer could craft a whole Rocket without the need for tools. In case of any modifications, the engineers would update the CAD file and create a new modified version in no time.

The cost of the Engine is as expensive as 40% of the cost of the entire Rocket. By designing with the 3D printer, the manufacturers could less the overall cost of the Rocket.

Future prospects and possibilities of 3D printed rockets

3D printing technology set a new record in the history of rockets and the rockets manufacturing processes.

The basic structure of rocket design might have not changed, but the 3D-printed rocket technology incorporated new features for better performance. It can also reduce the cost of mass production of Engines, the most expensive rocket component. Additionally, it simplifies by reducing the number of production steps and enables to reiterate of the designs.

It sounds like 3D printing paved the new way for spacecraft manufacturers. In the future, 3D-printed rocket technology will enable engineers to explore the designs in a short time.
