The Fastest Swimmer in the World

The Florida-based athlete swam 47.02 in the 100-meter freestyle on Wednesday. Dressel was very emotional at the end of the race. He said in the NBC interview after completing the race”It’s a really tough year, just really hard, so to have the results show up, I mean, it really came together, so I’m happy.”

Australian swimmer Kyle Chalmers was very close behind, his record was 47.08, following Russian athlete Kliment Kolesnikov who earned bronze with the record of 47.44. Dressel participated in the race already and won one medal in Tokyo as part of the United States 4X100 meter freestyle relay team. He made a successful Olympic debut in 2016, earning a gold medal in the 4X100 meter freestyle relay, in which he passed to the swimming legend Michael Phelps.

In addition to the new Olympic record, he earned a gold medal. He became a four-time gold medalist. He earned the first three gold medals from relays, two from Rio, the last one in the 4X100 relay at the Tokyo games. Dressel became popular in 2019 by smashing the world record previously held by Michael Phelps who announced his retirement after the games in Rio, in the 100-meter butterfly. Dressel has been compared to Phelps because of his performance in swimming. He went to the Tokyo Olympics after qualifying for three individual events that included the 100-meter butterfly, the 50-meter freestyle, and the 100-meter freestyle. During the Olympic trials in June, the 24-year-old set the highest record for the fastest 100-meter butterfly on American soil to secure his place for Tokyo Olympics 2020.

He also earned seven gold medals in the 2017 World Championships and eight gold medals from the World Championship 2019. No other athlete in history has achieved eight medals at one World Championships game.
