Google’s 23rd birthday and its history
Did you know? Two Ph.D. students came up with the concept of building up a prototype of a ‘large-scale search engine’. Google’s production began in 1997 and was officially founded on September 27, 1998. Google co-founder Sergey Brin was a graduate student at Stanford University in 1997. He met another co-founder, Larry Page. Both co-founders started developing a new search engine together in their dorm rooms. Google, Inc was officially born in 1998. Only some people are aware that Page and Brin called their initial design ‘BackRub’ in 1996 with the assistance of Scott Hassan and Alan Sternberg. Later, the search engine was called after the word utilized to represent the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, indicating the founder’s mission and vision to arrange ‘world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.’
The search engine soon became popular and successful and helped expand the company many times. Google was finally set at Mountain View in 2003. It has turned into the most used web-based search engine. In 2003, it became the fastest growing and the largest media company in the world. The company founded Google News in 2002, then Gmail in 2004. The company launched Google Maps in 2005 and Google Chrome in 2008. In 2011, the social network called Google+ launched. Google remained the primary subsidiary of the holding company Alphabet Inc.
Silicon Valley investors were the ones who initiated the funding in Google in 1998. After that, it was officially registered as a company. Google’s first office was established in the garage in Menlo Park, California. Surprisingly, it was owned by the present CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki. Earlier, the office was established with big desktops, a ping pong table, and a bright blue carpet. It is also believed that Google’s website was kept colorful because of this tradition.
The first Google doodle was created in 1998, featuring a “stick figure in the logo announcing to site visitors that the entire staff was playing hooky at the Burning Man Festival.” It was organized in Black Rock City in Nevada. Since then, acknowledging a significant event through Google Doodle is still followed.
Google’s birthday should be celebrated on September 4 every year because that was the original date when the company was established. Google changed the date to September 27 with an announcement of indexing record number webpages. Sundar Pichai was selected to be the CEO of Google on October 24, 2015.
