1.World Wide Web Birthday

Do you know when the first website was made? August 1st is recognized as World Wide Web Day. In 1989, the World Wide Web was developed in a CERN lab located in Geneva, Switzerland. Why was the World Wide Web invented? Originally, the website was conceived and developed to resolve automated information-sharing among scientists in institutes and universities across the world.

2.How WWW Started

In 1989, British scientist Tim Berners-Lee designed the World Wide Web. While developing at CERN, he composed the code for the World Wide Web using the NeXT computer in order to share documents between scientists across the world utilizing hyperlinks.

3.The First Website on the Internet

The world’s first website launched and went online on August 6, 1991. This project was devoted to information on WWW. It was designed by Tim Berners-Lee. This website used a NeXT computer at the European Organization particularly for Nuclear Research, at CERN. http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html was the first webpage address. The world wasn’t aware of the website because it was created for his colleagues.

At present, over 1.9 billion websites are running on the internet. 

4.First Image on the Internet

Berners-Lee uploaded the first picture live on the internet on July 18, 1992. It was the photo of a parody pop band called Les Horribles Cernettes founded by CERN employees. The photography of the band included images of Michele Muller, Angela Higney, Colette Marx-Nielsen, and Lynn Veronneau.

5.First Email on the Web

In 1971, computer engineer Ray Tomlinson sent the first network email. What was written in the first email? “something like QWERTYUIOP” was the first email that was sent to himself.

The mail was sent from one computer to another while sitting right beside the computer from Cambridge, Massachusetts. It traveled through ARPANET, which was a network of computers that was known as a precursor to the internet.

6.The First Internet Search Engine

The first internet search engine was called Archie which was the first tool for indexing FTP archives and authorized people to fetch specific files.

7.Making World Wide Web Free

Earlier, WWW was accessible to Lee and other CERN researchers, later in 1993, the organization declared people could use the web for free.

Mosaic was the first browser that could display images inline along with texts.

8.Different Names Considered before the World Wide Web

Lee used different names before the World Wide Web. Information Mesh, Mine of Information, and The Information Mine were the various terms used to describe WWW.

“surfing the Web” is a term used to describe “using the internet”, which was universalized by a librarian Jean Armour Polly who used “surfing the Internet.”
