James Bond was Originally a Novel

James Bond is the most popular movie character of all time. All these famous movie franchises are book-based. James Bond is a creation of renowned British novelist, Ian Fleming, who introduced the character in his first thriller novel, Casino Royale, in 1953.

Bond Has a History

Ian Fleming described in the book, “You Only Live Twice,” about Bond’s life story. James Bond has a great history. He was eleven years old when his parents died. His father, Andrew Bond, was an owner of a weapons company, and his mother, Monique Delacroix, was a Swiss woman. He stayed with his aunt, studied in Edinburgh, and joined the Royal Navy.

James Bond Shot More than 4000 Times

Believe it or not, James Bond has been shot over 4662 times, according to NME’s 2012 report. The number might have increased after “Skyfall” and “Spectre” were released.

James Bond Name

James Bond is named after the ornithologist of the same name. The name was derived from the bird-watching book that Ian Fleming kept with him while he was searching for a name “as mundane as possible.”

Thunderball is Known as the Most Successful Bond Movie

According to Forbes, “Thunderball” is the most successful James Bond film. As of 2020, the movie earned $590 million, following “Goldfinger” with $514.7 million, and “Skyfall” with $358.3 million.

Eight Actors Have Portrayed James Bond

James Bond has been in movies since the ‘60s. Many pre-eminent actors have played the roles. Six of those actors are Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Nelson was the first Bond actor in the TV show, “Climax.” Niven was cast in the 1967 movie, “Casino Royale,” in which he portrayed an older Bond.

Bond is a Frequent Smoker, Drinker, & Drug User

Vesper, a martini (shaken, not stirred), is his all-time favorite drink. But many fans do not know that he is also a smoker. He is also a drug user though it hasn’t been shown in the movies.

His First Gun

James Bond’s first firearm was the Beretta 418, which was an Italian handgun. Later, the choice of weapon was replaced in the movie “Dr. No.”

His Love for Disneyland

The spy’s childlike side was mentioned in John Gardner’s book called “Never Send Flowers.” This book follows the visit of James Bond to Disneyland Paris with his girlfriend. It was supposed to be halted, but the visit was turned into a week-long stay. Moreover, the final fight takes place at the same park.

James Bond Once Had a Wife

James Bond might be extremely famous among the ladies, but did you know that the secret agent is already married? In the 1969 movie, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” James Bond is married to Contessa Teresa. However, towards the end of the film, she is killed by the antagonist, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

The spy also had a son named James Suzuki, with Kissy Suzuki, in “You Only Live Twice” (1967). James Suzuki appeared in Raymond Benson’s “Blast From the Past,” which is one of the James Bond short stories and was published in Playboy magazine in 1997.

The Laser Beam in Goldfinger Was Real

“Goldfinger” of 1964 is believed to be the first film in history to show the audience what the laser beam in a sequence looks like. This scene shows the Auric Goldfinger with a laser beam cutting through a table to which the spy is bound. Interestingly, the laser was invented only four years ago. But still, the production unit brought the real laser-emitting machine, and it could not cut through the table. So, another person was placed under the table to a blowtorch and create the effect of the laser slicing through it.

In addition, it was also in Goldfinger that James Bond was the first to be seen driving the Aston Martin and using all types of gadgets against the villains

Two Bond Films Have the Same Plot

Of course, yes! This is the fact about James Bond that might divide the Eon Productions’ loyalists from the rest. Sean Connery played the Bond role in Thunderball 1965. It was an Eon Production film, where the story revolves around the NATO atomic bombs stolen by Spectre.

Twelve years after he last played Bond, and though it was successful, “Never Say Never Again” was not made by the Eon Production and is, therefore, not part of the James Bond Canon. Interestingly, this time, Moore had already appeared as Bond in six films.

Five Bond Films Have Won Oscars

Goldfinger was the first to win an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects in 1965. Two years later, “Thunderball” won the award for Best Special Effects. Also, no other Bond film won an Oscar for the next 46 years until “Skyfall” bagged the awards for Best Original Song and Best Sound Editing in 2013. So, in total, the Bond movies have won many Oscars.

James Bond is Scottish

The secret agent, James Bond, has Scottish roots, which is mentioned in Fleming’s “You Only Live Once.” In the book, he talks about the agent having a Scottish father and his mother hailing from Switzerland. Also, Skyfall shows James Bond visiting his old home situated in Scotland.

Even so, Fleming based his principal character on the people he met, including the people he encountered during his time at the Naval Intelligence Division in World War II.

What is Spectre?

Do you know what Spectre is? It is a criminal organization led by Ernst Stavro Blofeld. The name is an anagram for “Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion.” Many actors in the James Bond movies have played Blofeld and essayed about it, the latest being Christoph Waltz in “Spectre” and “No Time to Die.”

Roger Moore Preferred Non-Violence

We all know that he was one of the most successful James Bond ever, but Roger Moore disliked the violence in the movie. He suffered from a fear of firearms because of the childhood incident when he was accidentally shot in the leg by his brother. This explains why he is the ‘Least Deadliest” Bond as well.

Despite all his real-life happenings, Moore did seven Bond films for Eon Productions, during which he handled several gun-toting sequences like an ace.

The Most and Least Deadly Bond

Actually, the Irish actor, Pierce Brosnan, is considered the deadliest Bond. But do you know why? In “GoldenEye,” which was released in 1995, he killed 47 people, and Brosnan went on to play the iconic spy in the James Bond movies like “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997), “The World Is Not Enough” (1999), and “Die Another Day” (2002).

For all that, Roger Moore only took one life in the James Bond movie, “The Man With The Golden Gun,” in the year 1974, and this film has the lowest Bond kill count when compared to the other films.
