Football, commonly referred to as American football, is a popular game in the United States and Canada. Two teams with eleven players each compete and it is one of the most aggressive sports in the world. As aggressive as it is, football is an equally incredible sport with some unbelievable facts.

The first football game was played between New Jersey’s Rutgers and Princeton college teams in 1869. The sport is 153 years old, making football one of the youngest sports in history. The gameplay of football has evolved largely from soccer and rugby. 

Following the American Civil War, sports like baseball, football, and basketball gained popularity among people, especially colleges. Football developed a sense of unity and sportsmanship among the players, which was much needed in the aftermath of the war.

The rising popularity of the game led to the formation of the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in 1920, now known as the National Football League (NFL). The NFL conducts over 256 games every year, starting from Labor Day to New Year’s Day. The playoffs lead to the Super Bowl, one of the most anticipated sports events in the United States.

The first-ever Super Bowl was won by Green Bay Packers in 1967. The team gained victory after a nail-biting game against the Kansas City Chiefs with an unbelievable score of 35-10. The Green Bay Packers have a total of 4 Super Bowl wins under their belt.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the most Super Bowl wins in the history of the NFL. The team holds a record of six wins out of eight appearances. It is closely followed by the Dallas Cowboys and The New England Patriots with five and four wins out of eight games, respectively.

A huddle is a practice followed in football to strategize, motivate, or celebrate among team members. This was first done by Paul Hubbard, a quarterback in the 1890s. Hubbard was deaf and didn’t want the opponent team to read his hand signs. So, he would bring his team together in a tight circle whenever he wanted to communicate. 

The balls used in colleges and by professionals are different. The ones used for college tournaments have white stripes on each end, making it easier to be visible in flight.
