The Olympics is one of the world’s foremost sports competitions and indeed a fantastic arena for athletes. The first modern Olympics took place on April 6, 1896, in Athens, Greece. Right from 1896, Americans have participated in all Olympics games except the 1980 Summer Olympics. The United States boycotted the 1980 summer Olympics in Moscow to protest against the invasion of Afghanistan. Before the 2021 Olympics, the American athletes had won a total of 2,523 medals at the Summer Olympic Games in which 1,022 were gold and 305 at the Winter Olympic Games.
The United States has hosted the Summer Olympics four times. The first Summer Olympics games in the USA were held in 1904 at St.Louis, Missouri, in 1932 and 1984 Olympics games were held in Los Angeles, California and the 1996 games were held in Atlanta, Georgia. During the 1984 Olympics, the United States had won 83 gold medals and set the record for most medals won in a single Olympics.
The United States has reached a historical milestone at the 2016 Rio Olympics Games by earning the name of the first nation to win 1000 Olympic gold medals. The United States won their 1000th Olympic gold medal in the American women’s 4×100 meter medley relay. The milestone was shared by USA Olympic gold medalists Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Simone Manuel, and Dana Vollmer.
The United States has won the most medals in the history of the Olympics and as of now, the nation has a total of 2,869 medals of which 1,036 of them are gold. In the Tokyo 2021 Olympics Games, the United States has won 14 gold medals and is in the third position as of July 29, 2021. Chase Kalisz captured the first gold medal for the USA.
