United States

The United States rail network is the largest rail network in the world spanning over 250,000 km, primarily used for freight transportation. About 80% of the rail network is dedicated to freight transportation, while the passenger rail network spans approximately 35,000 km. The U.S., freight network comprises 538 railroads, including 7 Class One railroads, 21 regional railroads and 510 local railroads, all managed by private organizations.

China

China’s rail network ranks as the second largest rail network in the world.  With a total length of over 1500,000 km, as revealed in a recent survey. On top of that, the distance of the High-Speed Rail track is 40000 km, which is the largest in the world. In 2013, this largest rail network transported 2.08 billion passengers (the second highest after Indian Railways) and 3.22 billion tons of freight(the second highest after the USA rail network). 

Russia 

Russia, the largest country in the world, occupies third place on the list of nations with extensive rail networks. Despite having the third-largest rail network in the world, certain areas of the country remain unconnected due to population density and weather conditions. Russia’s railway network is administered by the state-owned monopoly, Russian Railway (RZD) spanning about 86,000 km.

India

The Indian rail network is the fourth largest in the world, owned and managed by the state-owned Indian Railways. In 2023 Indian Railways transported about 8 billion passengers (the highest in the world) and 1.01 million tons of freight (the fourth highest) The Indian Railway network diverged into 17 zones and operates over 19,000 trains each day. 

Canada 

With 48,000 km of rail lines, Canada ranks as the fifth largest rail network in the world. 

Canadian National Railways(CN) and Canadian Pacific Railways(CP) are the two major companies managing freight.
