What Type of Scoring Is Used in Badminton?

• A badminton match is made up of the best of three 21-point games.
• Every time a service is made, a point is scored.
• A point is added to the score of the team that wins a rally.
• At 20 points apiece, the team that achieves a two-point advantage first wins the game.
• At 29 points each, the team that scores the 30th point wins the game.
• In the following game, the team that wins the previous game serves first.

In badminton, there are two types of games: singles and doubles. They both also have separate scoring systems in badminton.

Singles

• At the starting stage of the game (0-0), the server serves from the right service court and when their score is even. The server serves from the left service court when his or her score is odd.
• If the server wins a rally, he or she receives a point and then returns to the alternate service court to serve again.
• If he or she wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the left service court if their score is odd and the right service court if it is even.

Doubles 

• There is only one ‘set’ on each side.
• The service is passed to the players in the order depicted in the diagram.
• The server serves from the right service court at the start of the game and when the score is even. When the situation is unusual, the server will serve from the left court.
• The serving side scores a point if they win a rally, and the same server serves from the alternate service court.
• If the receiving team wins a rally, they are awarded a point. The serving side is now the receiving side.
• When their side is serving, the players do not switch service courts until they win a point.

Interval (Change of Side)

• Players will get a 60-second pause when the leading score exceeds 11 points.
• Each game has a 2-minute break between them.
• When the leading score hits 11 points in the third game, the player’s switch ends.
