What You Need to Know about Mexico’s Cabo Pulmo National Park?

The Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of the marine reserves in Mexico. It is located on the Baja California Peninsula and spans across a 70 square kilometer area. It is situated a couple of hours from San Jose del Cabo. What initially started as a tiny fishing village has now metamorphosed into one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, thanks to local conservation efforts. Even today, local residents take up the challenge of preserving the environment by cleaning the beaches in Cabo Pulmo and strictly following the park regulations.

Endangered species protection

The marine diversity of the Cabo Pulmo National Park is so vast that it is a competitor to the Great Barrier Reef. In addition, the park contains some of the topmost snorkeling spots in North America. If you visit this place, you can do a lot of snorkeling and spend time with sea lions and sea turtles. Scuba diving is also permitted in some locations. Five of the endangered species of sea turtles can be found in the Cabo Pulmo National Park. In fact, you will be able to see lots of sea turtle nesting sites that are protected by the people in the park.

However, commercial fishing and sportfishing are not permitted in Cabo Pulmo. But, you can surely have an “off the beaten path” experience if you visit this National Park.

Biodiversity hotspot

Cabo Pulmo is an incredible place whose underwater world is home to several humpback whales, giant stingrays, and 14 different species of shark. It is, in fact, regarded as one of the national treasures of Mexico. It is rightly given the nickname, “The Aquarium of the World.” There are a number of mountains and deserts that surround the park. You can even see several trails in and around the National Park. So, it is a wonderful place for hikers and travelers to explore and enjoy the beauty of it all.

There is just one coral reef in the Sea of Cortez and Cabo Pulmo is home to this reef.

Accommodations in Cabo Pulmo

In total, there are three locations where camping is allowed in the Cabo Pulmo National Park. They are Los Frailes, Los Arbolitos, and Miramar. There are also a few places that serve as accommodations in Cabo Pulmo. Most of these accommodations are solar-powered. Visitors to the park are encouraged to explore their environment and care for the same using eco-friendly ways. One of these ways is getting to know the surroundings via kayaking.
