Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States and it is observed on the first Monday of September month in order to honor and recognize the American labor movement, as well as the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the country.

The first Labor Day proposal outlined the form that the holiday should take a street parade to demonstrate to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations.

The significance of Labor Day in the United States has shifted over time, particularly as the influence of unions has warned. Many people used it as an end-of-summer celebration and a long weekend for family gatherings. At the same time, it has continued to be celebrated with parades, speeches, and political rallies, and the day is sometimes used as the official start date for national political campaigns. 

The theme of Labor Day celebrations has shifted in recent years, particularly in large industrial cities where large parades and mass displays have proven problematic. This shift, on the other hand, is more of a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day speeches by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics, and government officials are widely publicized in newspapers, radio, and television.

Labor Day weekend also marks the end of summer for many Americans, and it is marked by parties, street parades, and sporting events. The first worker parades in Canada were held in 1872 in Ottawa and Toronto, and later that year, the law-making of labor unions illegal was repealed. In 1882, McGuire was invited to speak at the celebration. The holiday was officially recognized in Canada by Parliament in 1894.
