  • William Dickey, a Gold prospector gets credit for naming the mountain “Mount McKinley” in 1896. Mount Denali was named after President McKinley, a supporter of the gold industry.
  • When Mount Denali Mountain was first mapped, it was referred to as Tenada. The name was given by Ferdinand von Wrangel in 1839.
  • James Wickersham was the first person who made the first attempt to climb the Denali mountain in 1903. It was not a successful attempt. In 1906, Fredrick Cook claimed that he climbed the Denali which was not verified. The three climbers were the first verified people to reach the summit on June 7th, 1913.
  • Denali became the third tallest of the Seven Summits, followed by Mount Everest in Asia and Mount Aconcagua in South America.
