Which Scientist Invented the Rolling Office Chair?

English biologist Charles Darwin invented the wheeled office chair. Darwin was a workaholic and used to spend many hours collecting specimens of plants and animals.

Office Chair and its History

As a hard-working person, Darwin needed to take rest on occasion. He lived in the 19th century when chairs were produced only with fixed legs. Darwin wanted the chair to slide around and move while sitting, so he modified a chair by adding wheels on the legs.

Presently, wheels known as casters are a common feature found in office chairs. Darwin’s rudimentary design allows employees to move around without having to stand up. These office casters were characteristically made of either soft or hard materials. Soft casters are best on hardwood, tile, laminate, and linoleum floors. Hard casters work great on carpet floors.
