History of New Year Resolutions
4,000 years ago, the ancient Babylonians are said to have made the first people to make New Year’s resolutions. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of New Year. For them New Year will begin in mid March and not in January, it will begin when the crops are all planted.
During a massive 12 days religious festival called the Akitu, the Babylonians crowned a new king and then they made promises to the gods to behave, to pay their debts and to return any objects they borrowed from others. This is how the New Year resolution started in the beginning. It is believed that if the Babylonians kept to their words, then their Pagan gods will bestow them their favor in the coming year.
