BTS Perform at UN Assembly

Why is BTS in UNGA? Bangtang Sonyeondan, commonly known as BTS, took part in the UN Assembly in subdued dark suits. They delivered a speech on Sustainable Development Goals. After that, the pop stars switched on a pre-recorded video of their own track “Permission to dance” and they showed their moves in the General Assembly and on the World body’s lawn fronting the East River.

BTS has addressed the United States Assembly before the summit begins. They shared a powerful message with the world. This isn’t the first time the K-pop band participated in the UN. In 2018, the BTS gang leader Kim Namjoon of BTS or RM spoke at the UN as he has a partnership with UNICEF. BTS also virtually took part in the US Assembly in 2020 in which the entire band spoke in Korean.

The band has represented differently this time. The South Korean president appointed them as the Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture. He introduced them as “The next speakers to the podium are probably the artists most loved by people around the world,”

Their speech was about the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID generation, and the struggles youth are facing, and climate change. The band also stressed the importance of COVID-19 vaccines. All the members of the BTS gang were vaccinated against the COVID-19 and requested their fanbase to get their vaccination. The band also highlighted how the young lost their last year due to the global pandemic, including graduation and other important events that were suspended. They said, instead of calling lost generations, call it a ‘welcome’ generation. They challenged the perspective of their generation being “the covid lost generation.” The most positive speech was delivered by J-Hope who denoted the vaccine as a “ticket to meeting fans,” and ended their speech with a promise that “We think the day we can meet again face to face is not far away.”

South Korean President Moon Jae-in introduced BTS to suppress the seizing efforts of Seoul on the global recognition of K-pop.
