What Makes an American Green Frog Green?

Green tree frogs can be seen in the southeast U.S. from Florida to Virginia and central Texas to the west. As the name indicates, they are a bright green color. Green tree frogs are medium-sized, and up to 6 cm (2.5 in) long. There are three kinds of pigment cells, known as chromatophores, that work together to make a frog green. Hyla cinerea (American Green Tree frog) is a species of amphibians belonging to the hylid frogs’ family. They mostly prefer homes with plentiful floating vegetation, cattails, and grasses.

Green tree frogs are amphibians and are considered one of the most beautiful frogs in North America. They utilize their green shade as an effective camouflage to fight against predators. Depending on lighting green tree frogs can change colors between dark to light green. Their call sounds are similar to barking dogs and metallic honks. They are very active at night and love to climb rather than jump.

General Characteristics

These frogs’ bodies are typically green in color ranging from vibrant yellowish-olive to lime green. The shade changes depending on temperature or lighting. They have small patches of gold or white on the skin and also have pale yellow, white or cream-colored lines running from their jaws or upper lips to groins. Male frogs have wrinkled throats (the vocal pouch) and are smaller than females. American green tree frog females breed once in a year.
