The boy, George William Jorgensen, Jr., was born on the 30th of May, 1926, in the Bronx, New York City. George William Jorgensen was attracted to his male friends, but he knew that he wasn’t gay. When Jorgensen grew up and enlisted in the Army, he managed to hide his attraction toward other men. It was because he was scared of being labeled as a “homosexual,” which, if found out, could result in a dishonorable discharge from the Army or spending time in prison.

Jorgensen kept searching for answers to her endless questions about her identity. Thankfully, many of his family members, including his mother and grandmother, were quite supportive.

The Most Significant Part of Christine Jorgensen’s Story

Jorgensen met Dr. Christian Hamburger when he arrived in Denmark. Hamburger was the very first person to diagnose George William Jorgensen’s identity. The doctor came to the conclusion that Jorgensen was, indeed, a transsexual and not a homosexual. During the next couple of years, Jorgensen went through lots of treatments and also surgery to get rid of his male genitalia. He changed his name to Christine in order to honor his doctor, Dr. Christian Hamburger, who was extremely helpful in making his dreams come true. 

On the 1st of December, 1952, there was a headline on the front page of the New York Daily News. This was what the headline stated:

“Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty: Operations Transform Bronx Youth.” Christine instantly became an overnight sensation! Christine Jorgensen received several letters from across the globe, and many people who were facing the same problem that she had faced before her surgery, sought her guidance and help.

In the later stages of her life, Christine Jorgensen suffered from bladder and lung cancer. On the 3rd of May, 1989, she breathed her last.
