Fun facts about CODA (movie)

CODA stands for “Child of Deaf Adults” and is a coming-of-age dramedy, written and directed by Sian Heder in 2021. It is an English movie remake of the French-Belgian film La Famille Belier, released in 2014. The movie is about a nominal child of deaf adults, the only hearing member of the deaf family, trying to help her family’s fishing business while pursuing her own singing dreams.

Cast and Crew

Emilia Jones, who also appeared in the popular Netflix series “Locke and key,” plays Rossi. She is the main protagonist of the movie. Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Vikings) is her friend Miles, and Daniel Durant (You) plays her brother, Leo.

Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin play deaf parents in CODA, Frankie and Jackie. At the 94th Academy Award, Kotsur became the second deaf actor – and the first man – to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in CODA.

Every artist in the cast contributed to this family drama and brought to life a naturalistic performance.

Story begins…

CODA is an inspiring film with a moral message, the story involves family challenges, teenage trials, and the power of education.

CODA is a delightful story about an 18-year-old teenage girl Ruby Rossi, who is the only person in the family without a hearing disability. Her father, Frankie is a fisherman and cannot respond to Coast Guard calls, violating the fishing code since he is deaf, so she needs to help him. 

Ruby is passionate about singing, she wants to join Berklee College of Music and wants to live her life but her family relies on her. She joins a chorus group that leads to conflict. She gets stuck between her family and her passion.

The End

When Ruby gives an audition to get into Berklee, finally her parents decide to support her by sitting on the upper balcony of the audition hall to watch her perform. In the beginning, she feels nervous, but after seeing her parents she gains confidence and gives an incredible performance. She even signs while singing to make her family understand that family is also important to her.
