Toyota Motor Manufacturing (TMMK), Kentucky, Inc is the largest Toyota manufacturing plant in the world. It is capable of producing more than 600,000 engines and 550,000 vehicles. Since1988, over 11 million vehicles have rolled off Toyota’s assembly lines in Georgetown and TMMK has more than 8,000 full-time workers.
TMMK manufactures USA’s best selling cars the Avalon, Camry Hybrid, Avalon Hybrid, and Lexus ES 350, and also four-cylinder and V-6 engines. Toyota invested $1.33 billion in TMML to build Toyota New Global Architecture and contributed $120 million to expand 2.5- liter engine production in 2017.
TMMK is a part of Toyota Engineering & Manufacturing North America (TEMA), owned by Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan.
TMMK was originally called Motor Manufacturing USA. It was founded in 1986. It was first owned by Toyota manufacturing plant in the U.S. and remained Toyota’s largest manufacturing facility in the world.
TMMK commenced production in May 1988, manufacturing the 1989 model 4-cylinder Camry. Earlier engines were brought from the Toyota Kamigo Plant in Toyota, Japan. From 1988-1992, an on-site engine plant was included which helped to expand the American content to 75%. Workers also improved the manufacturing process.
In 2006, as per Harbour Consulting’s rating, TMMK held the 8th position as the most efficient auto plant in North America.
Additionally, Toyota started manufacturing Camry at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc in 2007 to fulfill the demand for the new Camry.
On 13 November 2013, Toyota declared that it would terminate the contract with Subaru of Indiana Automotive in 2016.
TMMK began the production of the Lexus ES sedan in October 2015, and 50,000 vehicles were produced annually, moreover 750 jobs to the employees. It invested $360 million to support the additional work.
The best selling car in the US, the Toyota Camry, is produced in Georgetown, Kentucky.
Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corporation stated, “Lexus was founded in the United States, so it is only fitting that we are bringing the production of luxury sedans for our U.S. customers back to where the brand was born.” Further said, “It is also fitting that we chose Kentucky because it was Toyota’s first stand-alone plant in America. So in a way, for manufacturing, Kentucky is Toyota’s home. It also has some of the most experienced Toyota team members in the world.”
At present, it manufactures the Avalon sedan, Camry sedan, RAV4 Hybrid, and Lexus ES sedan for 2020.
