Hi there! I’m the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but you can call me Torre. I’ve been standing here in Pisa, Italy, watching history unfold, meeting people from all over the world, and—of course—learning! You might think of me as just a tower, but I’m so much more than that—one of the seven wonders of the world. I’ve seen battles, survived earthquakes, and even helped with scientific discoveries! There’s a lot more to my story than just my famous tilt. So, if you’re ready, I’d love to share some of my favorite facts about me and the incredible adventures I’ve had. Let’s start with my favorite 20 facts about me!
When my builders first started working on me in 1173, they had no idea I would start leaning. They wanted me to be tall and straight like any other tower, but the soft ground beneath me had other plans! I guess you could say I’m just a little off-kilter—literally! Who knew I’d become an iconic tourist attraction for being a bit tipsy?
I was born (or started being built) way back in the 12th century. That means I’ve been standing here, leaning and all, for over 800 years! Imagine all the stories I could tell—if only my bricks could talk, they’d probably say, “I’ve been leaning into history long before it was cool!”
You might think I was built quickly, but nope! It took nearly 200 years to complete me. Wars, problems with money, and that pesky leaning issue slowed things down. I guess even towers have their off days—just a little longer than most!
My construction wasn’t straightforward. After I started leaning, the builders stopped working on me for almost 100 years! I was built in three different phases, with long breaks in between. Imagine being stuck halfway through building a giant sandcastle and then coming back to finish it years later!”
Guess what? If it wasn’t for my leaning, I might have been destroyed! When construction was halted because of wars, my tilt kept me from being torn down. Lucky, huh?
From the ground to the top of my bell tower, I’m about 56 meters tall (that’s about 185 feet). But if you measure me from the lowest side, I’m only about 55 meters tall because of my lean! It’s like I’m trying to win the “Tallest Tower” competition but with a bit of a tilt for style!
Yep, I’ve got seven beautiful bells at the top of my tower. Each one plays a different musical note. Together, they can create a whole tune! But be careful climbing all those 294 steps to see them – just be prepared for the workout!
Each of my seven bells has its special name.
Together, we create a beautiful symphony that echoes across Pisa.
I didn’t always lean this much. Over the centuries, my tilt became more pronounced, and by 1990, I was leaning so much I could’ve been mistaken for a funky dance move! Thankfully, some clever engineers helped straighten me up a bit, and now my tilt angle is a more modest 5.5 degrees.
I’m not just any old tower; I’m made of gleaming white and grey marble! This gives me an elegant look. But it’s also one of the reasons why I’m so heavy—estimated at 14,500 tonnes. Guess you could say I’m the heavyweight champ of architecture, leaning and all!
Shh, don’t tell anyone, but I have a secret entrance that was used by workers while building me. It’s tucked away on my lowest side, where the lean is the greatest! Talk about a hidden gem!
My original job was to ring out the time and call people to worship at the nearby cathedral. But now, I’m more famous for my lean than for my bells! I guess you could say I took the phrase “leaning on the job” to a whole new level!
In 1987, UNESCO recognized me as a World Heritage Site. That means I’m so iconic that people from around the globe work tirelessly to keep me upright and well-preserved. Who knew leaning could make you a world treasure?
Over the centuries, I’ve faced several earthquakes, including four strong and deadliest quakes since 1280. But I’m still standing! The secret lies in my flexible foundation, which helps me absorb the shock. It’s like I have my special superpower that keeps me safe!
A famous scientist named Galileo Galilei is said to have dropped different objects from my top to study gravity. Isn’t that cool? I helped with science!
Between 1990 and 2001, engineers worked hard to reduce my lean by about 17 inches. They dug out some of the ground beneath me to make me safer, so I wouldn’t fall over.”
Today, millions of people visit me every year. They take funny pictures pretending to hold me up, and some even climb to my top! I love making people smile.
Many people don’t know that I had a ‘sibling’ tower built nearby in the 12th century. Unfortunately, that tower didn’t make it—it collapsed due to the same soft soil that makes me lean. I guess I’m the lucky one who survived!
Did you know there’s another tower in Pisa that leans a little too? It’s called the Campanile of San Nicola, and it’s not far from me. I guess leaning runs in the family!
I’m not the only leaning tower in the world, but I’m the most famous! Other towers tilt, like the Leaning Tower of Suurhusen in Germany. But I’m the superstar!”
So there you have it! Those are just some of the amazing facts about me, Torre, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Hope now you have an answer to the question that popping up in your mind, “Why is the Tower of Pisa leaning?” Next time you see a picture of me, remember all the cool things we talked about today. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll come to visit me in person. I’ll be waiting right here, keeping an eye on Pisa, Italy!
