Adam chose to go back and retrace their steps after they reached the home because they couldn’t remember how they got there. When he went outside, he was transported to a world of enormous sandworms in the desert before Barbara pulled him back inside. Barbara asserts that he was gone for two hours even though he had been gone for less than a minute. She and Adam located a handbook for the recently deceased and know they did not escape the crash when they observed that they no longer had reflections.
