In Britain, for every Christmas, Queen Elizabeth holds a special pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace where every family member is summoned to the prominent gang assembling at Sandringham for church service on 25 December. Dutch royal family, King Willem, and his wife Queen Maxima with their three daughters, Princess Alexia, Princess Catharina-Amalia, and Princess Ariane, visit the homeland of Queen Maxima during the Christmas holidays. The Dutch royals usually give presents earlier in December as part of the country’s ‘Sinterklaas’ celebrations, which take place on Saint Nicholas’s Day, on 6 December.
The Swedish Royal family has a charming tradition of releasing a video of Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, and their two children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar, enjoying a Christmas activity. In Spain, King Felipe’s festive speech comes on Christmas Eve and is broadcasted from Zarzuela Palace. King Felipe and Queen Letizia then host a family Christmas lunch on 25 December with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Spain’s Christmas festivities don’t end until the Epiphany on 5 January, also former King Juan Carlos’ birthday.
In Denmark, the young royals steal the show, as in much of Europe, with Crown Princess Mary and Prince Frederik releasing a Christmas video featuring their adorable children, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine. On 23 December, the royal family decorated the Christmas tree at the Palace by themselves. The Queen’s speech is saved for New Year’s Eve, rather than 25 December.
