What was the history behind the birth of Botox?

Clostridium botulinum(Botox) was discovered by Belgium scientist Emile Pierre van Ermengem. The purified form of botulinum toxin type A was first isolated by Dr. Herman Sommer at the University of California, San Francisco. However, it took 20 years to finally isolate botulinum toxin in crystalline form, and it was done by Dr. Edward Schantz. But when was Botox first used medically? Botox was first used to treat crossed eyes in 1981, and it is considered the first-ever use of botulinum toxin for therapeutic purposes. 

Accidentally Discovery of Botox 

While experimenting with this procedure, scientists discovered botulinum toxin reduced the wrinkles in the glabella (the skin between the eyebrows and above the nose). Botox received FDA approval in 1989 for problems with the eye muscles. But, it got FDA approval for cosmetic procedures in 2002. However, Botox was primarily used to treat forehead wrinkles. How Does it Work? 

After injecting Botulinum toxin into the muscle, it spreads and binds through the nerve terminal and prevents the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter without which muscle activity stops. It stops spasms and smooth wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. This is how Botox works. In short, Botox works by paralyzing wrinkles. There are various side-effects of Botox, and the effects will last up to 3 to 6 months.
