The first New York Fashion Week was launched by Eleanor Lambert, press director of the New York Dress Institute, in 1943.

  • New York City was not originally a Place for Fashion Week

The first Fashion Week (formerly known as “Press Week”) was held in Paris, not in New York. Due to World War II raging throughout Europe, Americans couldn’t participate in most shows. To compensate for that absence, the American fashion industry decided to host fashion shows in their place, showcasing collections at The Plaza Hotel.

Despite what manY believe, Alexander Wang hosted the first NY Fashion Week. Eleanor Lambert organized FPW week in July to make the press discover the clothes and write about them a few weeks before they display in-store.
