10 Basic Rules of Badminton
In order to play a professional match with competitors, players have to follow all the rules that BWF creates. A match can be played with either two (singles) or four players (doubles).
In order to score a point, the player should hit the shuttlecock within the parameters of the opposite court.
An official game must be played indoors on the perfect court dimensions. The measurement of dimensions is 6.1m by 13.4m. The net should be placed at the centre of the court.
If the shuttlecock lands on your court then a point will be given to the opponent.
Players should serve diagonally in the net to their opposite players. Points will be given then serving stations change from one side to the other. No serves will be given if your first serve goes out and your opponent gets the point.
The serve should be hit underarm and below the player’s waist. You are not allowed to hit over your arm.
Every game starts with a toss to decide which player should serve first and which side of the court the opponent prefers to start from.
Players can move as they wish when the shuttlecock is ‘live.’ Players are permitted to hit shuttlecocks from outside of the playing area.
It is considered to be a fault if a player touches the net or any party of body or racket and the opponent gets a point.
If the shuttlecock is kept in the racket and tossed, or the shuttlecock is hit twice, or a player distracts his opponent or a player breaks any basic rules are considered as a fault.
Hidden and Unspoken Rules and Etiquette in Badminton
But there are some unwritten rules of badminton that every badminton fan should know.
Shaking hands with an opponent player is one of the basic unspoken rules. It also manifests good sportsmanship. If you are not shaking hands with your opponent, it shows disrespect.
Players need to provide their own shuttlecock for their match in the recreational game.
It is considered a good gesture when you are not sure about a line call; pass it to your opponent.
If you lose a point or the shuttlecock lands on your side of the court or near the net, you should pick and pass it back to your opponent. You shouldn’t expect your opponent to pick it up.
You should make sure your opponent is ready when you are about to serve. You shouldn’t surprise your opponents with sudden serves. It shows you are taking advantage of players.
You shouldn’t distract your opponent during a rally. During recreational play, you shouldn’t have a conversation with someone else or don’t scare your opponent.
You shouldn’t teach other players how to play continuously. It happens when a beginner player partners with a more experienced player.
