Santa Claus brings presents and sweets through the chimney to those well behaved kids on the big night of Christmas. This legendary figure Santa Claus and the tradition of gifts and sweets presenting can be traced back to the Dutch colonists.
In modern folklore, Santa Claus is said to make lists of children throughout the world. He categorizes them according to their behavior. He then sets out to deliver presents, including toys and candy, to all of the well-behaved children in the world and misbehaving children receive coal on Christmas.
Santa Claus’ story can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in the place called Patara, which is near Myra in Turkey. He is well known for his kindness, he became the subject of many legends because of his character. It is also said that St. Nicholas gave away all of his wealth to the poor and travelled to the countryside to help the needy and sick.
There are many popular stories of the legend St. Nicholas. One of the best stories is when he saved three poor sisters from being sold to prostitution by their very own father. Their father tried to sell them by providing dowry so that they could be married and Nicholas saved them.
Nicholas is well known as the protector of children and this popularity of his spread for many years. On December 6thwas his death anniversary and on that day his feast day was also celebrated. That day was considered as a lucky day traditionally.
St. Nicholas was one of the most popular saints in all of Europe. He remained as a positive reputation everywhere and especially in Holland.
