  • The Indiana River men succeeded in trouncing, or “hushing”. They were known as “Hashers” and became Hoosiers.
  • There was once a contractor named Hoosier who worked on the Louisville and Portland Rivers and wanted to hire workers from Indiana. Known as “Hoosier’s men,” all of Indiana eventually became known as Hoosiers.
  • One theory says that Gov. Joseph Wright apportioned the word Hoosier, “Hoosa,” from the Indian word for chicken. Men who sailed in flatboats from Indiana brought corn or corn to New Orleans, also known as “Hoosa men” or Hoosiers.
  • One explanation was offered by “Hoosier Poet” James Whitcomb Riley, who said that the Hoosiers originated in the wars of early Indiana colonists as brutal warriors who pulled or bit their ears and noses. This was a common occurrence during the war, so he was asked in vain, “Whose ears?” That became Hoosier.
