Great Danes Were Once Hunting Boars

In the 1800s, Great Danes were used as boar hunting dogs in Europe. The gigantic canines were bred of Irish wolfhound and also called the old English mastiff. They were powerful hunters who were extremely strong, quick, deadly and brave.
Great Dane was used to hunt boars, deer and bears. They were called the German Boarhound in English. But they are not Danish.

The Name Is Confusing
This dog originated from Germany, not Denmark. It is believed that the name was derived when French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, came across the breed while he was traveling in Denmark at the beginning of the 1700s. He named the huge dog “le Grand Danois’ ‘ or Great Dane, that name is still in use.
The Great Dane is also called Deutsche Dogge or the German Mastiff.
