Why does a solar eclipse occur? Solar Eclipse occurs when the Sun is completely blocked by the Moon while orbiting the Earth. This happens because the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. This activity helps block out the Sun’s light. The Sun is around 400 times bigger than the Moon.

 

What conditions must exist for a solar eclipse to occur? During a solar eclipse, the Moon creates a shadow on the Earth. The first shadow is known as the umbra (UM bruh). This shadow will get smaller when it approaches Earth. It is called the dark center of the shadow of the moon. The penumbra (pe NUM bruh) is known as the second shadow. People who come in the penumbra can see the partial eclipse and the people who come within the umbra will see the complete eclipse.

Types of Solar Eclipses

 

There are three types of solar eclipses. The solar eclipse is not visible to all the areas on Earth. Only someplace can observe it. The people who can watch the total eclipse are in the center of the Moon’s shadow during the shadow hits on the Earth. Throughout the eclipse, the sky seems dark like it is night. People can see the total eclipse when the sun, moon, and earth come in the same direct line.

The second eclipse is known as the partial solar eclipse. It occurs when the sun, moon, and Earth are not lined up in the same line. As a result, the sun has a dark shadow only on the surface like a border.

The third eclipse is called an annular or (ANN you ler) solar eclipse. It occurs when the moon is far away from the Earth. Hence it looks smaller and fails to block the complete sun’s view. This makes the sun look like a dark disk when the moon appears in front of the sun. This forms a ring shape at the surface of the moon.

The complete solar eclipse occurs rarely because the timing of the moon with the eclipse season needs to be perfect for an alignment between spectators and centers of the sun and the moon.

The solar eclipse is dangerous for the eyes because the sun intended to release more power. Exposing our eye to it can harm the retina. You don’t get a chance to look away when the sun shows up from behind the moon.
