Halloween is associated with the ancient Celtic festival Samhain which was observed on November 1 as per contemporary calendars. People wore costumes to ward off evil spirits and also light bonfires. On November 1, Celts celebrated the end of summer as the first day of the Celtic calendar, honoring the Lord of the Dead, called Samhain. The Celts believed that the dead could visit the land of the living at this time and the living could visit them. Halloween evolved from the festival Samhain. Over centuries, Halloween transformed from a pagan custom to a festival of costumes, parties, and jack-o-lanterns.
