History of Glue : How it is Made, Types

There is no doubt that the invention of adhesive has made lives easier. Usage of adhesive is one of the methods that has been used since prehistoric times. Archaeological excavations have revealed stone tools with traces of adhesive made from birch bark tar used by Neanderthals. In this blog, let’s discuss the “history of glue” and how the substance has evolved over the years.

Talking about evolution, do you think humans evolved from monkeys?

Neanderthals used stone tools, which when discovered, had traces of glue.
  • A. True
  • B. False

What is a Glue

When the preserved body of Otzi, the Iceman, supposedly 5,200 years old, was discovered along with his belongings, such as arrows and hatchets, archaeologists found traces of organic glue. This could be considered the origin and earliest use of glue by our human ancestors.

How is Glue made

Can You Make Glue Out of Human Bones?

While bone glue is traditionally made from animal bones, it’s highly unethical and illegal to use human bones for this purpose. Here’s why:

  • Ethical Concerns: Using human remains for any purpose other than respectful burial or scientific research is deeply unethical and violates human dignity.
Legal Restrictions: Handling human remains is strictly regulated by laws and requires proper permits and procedures. Using them for industrial purposes is illegal in most jurisdictions.
  • Health Risks: Human bones can potentially carry diseases, posing significant health hazards during processing and handling.

Traditional Bone Glue:
Bone glue is made from collagen, the primary protein in bones. Animal bones undergo a process of boiling and processing to extract collagen, which is then refined into glue. This process is used for various applications, including woodworking, bookbinding, and furniture restoration.

Cyanoacrylate Glue

Cyanoacrylate glue is the industrial name for super glue. Super glue is also known as “crazy glue.” Cyanoacrylate, in general, is the name given to quick-bonding super glues. Usually, the traditional adhesives are water-based. But cyanoacrylate glue contains an acrylic resin.

Types of Glue

Glue is made out of several substances, which have evolved from time to time.

  • Tar-Based: This is obtained from tree bark and is used to decorate items and affix tools to handles.
  • Animal Glue: This adhesive was created in China and derived from animal tissues and was used in joinery and the preservation of paintings and frames in furniture. It was also used in many other parts of Asia as well.
  • Egg-Based: This adhesive is known to have a very high adhesive strength because of the albumin present in egg whites and they turn out to be water-resistant once they dry. Besides being food, eggs are also used in the production of other products. If you are an egg lover, you need to know the difference between brown and white eggs. However, vegans may not use egg-based adhesive, which has led to the development of what is known as “vegan glue.” Most supermarkets today stock vegan adhesive, which is commonly used by vegans.
  • Fish: A bonding agent derived from the skin and bones of fish was used in ancient Egypt for shoemaking and the repair and manufacture of furniture as well as for preservation.
  • Rubber-Based: This bonding agent was found in 1830 and is used for the production of shoes, ceramics, and carpentry.
  • Horse: This adhesive is made from collagen that is extracted from animal materials such as horse bones and hooves. The process of making adhesive from animal parts has been in practice for a long time. However, this type of adhesive is not suitable for vegans, as they avoid the use of animal products.
  • Synthetic: This adhesive is derived from synthetic resins and rubber and does not contain any animal derivatives.

FAQ:

1. What is glue made of?
Glue is typically made from animal byproducts (like hooves and bones), synthetic polymers, or natural substances like starch.

2. What is the main material in glue?
Polymers are the primary building blocks of most modern glues.

3. How exactly glue works?
Glue works by creating a strong bond between two surfaces through a combination of mechanical adhesion and chemical bonding.
The glue’s molecules interlock with the microscopic pores of the materials, while simultaneously forming chemical bonds for added strength.

4. What makes glue strong?
A combination of mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding between the glue and the surfaces it adheres to creates its strength.

5. What are the disadvantages of glue?
Glue can be messy, have a strong odor, and might take time to dry. Some types can be toxic, and removing glue can damage surfaces.
