Football Teams That Don’t Exist Anymore
The first football game took place on November 6, 1869, between two college teams called Rutgers and Princeton. The history of American football can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century when colleges started playing rugby and soccer. The American Professional Football Association (APFA) started with ten teams. Only two football teams still exist including the Arizona Cardinals (previously called the Chicago Cardinals) and the Chicago Bears (originally called the Decatur Staleys).
We have clubbed football teams that don’t exist anymore. It is difficult to find because some teams have changed nicknames from year to year and every team represents the same team of the new franchise. It was common if teams had the same nicknames during the same seasons. No NFL teams have folded since 1952. The Cowboys, Giants, Colts, Panthers, Lions, and Texans teams listed on this page do not represent current franchises of those names.
