Confucius was the most popular philosopher-cum-teacher in China. His ideas have influenced (and continue to influence) the civilizations of his country and several other East Asian countries.
This year, again, World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated on the 5th of October. Since it turns out to be a Saturday, students can work together for the weekend celebrations by organizing various activities and colorful events to express their love and gratitude to their teachers.

On 5 October 1966, an intergovernmental conference in Paris was organized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and the ILO (International Labor Organization). These organizations adopted a Recommendation regarding the Status of Teachers, which details their rights and responsibilities.
Following the conference, governments unanimously acknowledged the importance of teachers, future education, initial preparation, employment, recruitment, and teaching-learning methods.
To commemorate the conference held on 5th October 1966 in Paris, the day was declared as World Teachers’ Day or International Teachers’ Day.
Although the intergovernmental conference in Paris took place in 1966, World Teachers’ Day was first celebrated in 1994. On this day, teachers and students came together to participate in events honoring teachers. Awards were also presented to teachers who excelled in their fields.
Many countries celebrate Teachers’ Day on the 5th of October. However, some nations observe this special day on different dates. For instance, Argentina celebrates Teachers’ Day on 11th September, and Chile on 16th October. Italy has been honoring teachers on 27th November, and Poland on 14th October.
Although some countries observe Teachers’ Day on different dates, the main reason behind the celebrations is to dedicate an entire day to teachers, honor their efforts, and pay respect to everything they do for the well-being of their students.

The EI includes 383 member organizations from around 178 countries. UNESCO and EI organize a campaign every year to better understand teachers’ roles and contributions to the development of students and society. The main focus of the campaign is bringing different themes each year. For example, the theme of 2017 was “Empowering Teachers,” and that of 2018 was “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher.”
Teachers play a prominent role in shaping students’ futures and assisting them in reaching their educational goals. However, to maximize their efforts and sacrifices, we must listen to their issues and address the challenges they face on a daily basis.
This year, UNESCO has organized events at its headquarters on World Teachers’ Day 2024 to commemorate their achievements and emphasize their importance in the society. The focus will be on the theme, “Valuing teacher voices: Towards a new social contract for education.”

It’s a day to honor our teachers’ achievements, address their challenges, and remember their responsibilities in achieving the world’s educational targets.
