Barnes & Noble was founded in the year 1886 by William Barnes, G Clifford Noble, and Charles M Barnes. Today, they operate around 769 campus bookstores in the US. There is a Barnes & Noble in every American state. The Elliott Management Corporation acquired it in 2019, and it has a great legacy, being considered not only the biggest bookstore in the US but also the largest in the world.

1. Union Square, NYC, New York

The Barnes and Noble branch of NYC is located in Union Square, New York. The building has a historical significance as it hosted the headquarters of Century Publishing Company in 1881. The space remained void for many years until Barnes and Noble occupied it in 1995. This bookstore is an official bookstore for New School. 

2. Mall of America, Bloomington, Minnesota

3. The Grove at Farmer’s Market, Los Angeles, California

The Grove is located in a notable landmark in Los Angeles– Farmer’s Market which has been active since 1934. There the Barnye and Noble store has three floors with a huge section dedicated to children and a specific space for events and signings.

Barnes and Noble Online Before Amazon

Barnes and Noble vs Amazon–a cold war has been bubbling among them since they began online selling. The latter sued the former for calling themselves “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore.”

Though Amazon is one of the world’s biggest bookstores, they weren’t the first ones to provide online services. In 1980, Barney and Noble took the first step in selling books online via a service called Trintex. With the support of IBM and Sears, Trintex provided shopping services online known as Prodigy.

1. It is said that Barnes & Noble sells around 155 million books every year through its retail stores and website.
2. In 1998, when the producers of the hit flick You’ve Got Mail that stars Tom Hanks approached Barnes & Noble for shooting the film in the store, the retail giant turned down the offer.
3. Barnes & Noble is the first American bookstore to advertise on television. Their ad appeared in 1974 through an advertising agency, Geer Dubois. However, it couldn’t continue to spend so much money on advertising further.
4. Barnes & Noble opened its website barnesandnoble.com for online sales in the year 1997. Ever since it has remained a rival to Amazon. Amazon sued the former for infringement of its business method patent.
5. Along with shopping for books, you can also sit and read in any Barnes &  Noble bookstore. They have cafes and restrooms for buyers to relax and spend time in the store.
6. In 2011, Barnes & Noble removed nearly 100 DC comics from its collection. Warner Bros’ exclusive digital deal with Amazon Kindle prompted this move.
7. Barnes & Noble was probably one of the first bookstore retailers to play music in the backdrop while customers purchased a book. Customers received this new feature at that time.
8. Barnes & Noble allows in-store shoppers to read Nook e-books for free in any format, but only for an hour.
