Melvin Van Peebles is a great ground-breaking playwright-director (born Melvin Peebles; August 21, 1932 – September 21, 2021) and is called the “Godfather of modern Black cinema.” This Gaint of Black Cinema is well known for his independent movies named Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song in 1971 and Watermelon Man in 1970. Also, he is credited for making African-American movies, making him the most iconic film director in the 1970s. In 1972, his film received an award at the San Francisco International Film Festival.
