Be it the modern-day superstars like Serena Williams, Simone Biles, and Megan Rapinoe or the early advocates for women’s place in sports, women have fought for equity in sports, including equal wages among male and female athletes as well as the right to take the field.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams, an American tennis player, born on Sep 26, 1981, made a revolution in Women’s tennis with her unique powerful style of play. Serena learned tennis from her father. In 1995, Williams became a professional player, one year after her sister Venus Williams. 

Serena has won her first Grand Slam singles title in the 1999 U.S. open and she is the one who won 23 Grand Slam singles titles which is more than any other woman or man.

Serena has won four Olympic gold medals, out of which she shared three with Venus and a gold medal in singles events in the London Olympic games in 2012. Serena married Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit and they have a daughter named Olympia. Recently, Nike has named their new building “SERENA.”

Simone Biles

Simon Arianne Biles, born on March 14, 1997, is a gymnast and one of the world’s greatest athletes. Biles is a consistent and exuberant personality who incorporates vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercises into her gymnastic routines.

She became the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Biles made history by winning four gold medals, one silver, and one bronze at the 2018 U.S. national championships.

In 2019, she became the first gymnast in more than six decades to win five gold medals at the world championships. Also, in the 2019 U.S. championships, Biles won five medals including four gold medals. Recently, in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Biles managed to get a bronze medal.

Lindsey Vonn

Lindsey Vonn, born on October 18, 1984, is an American former alpine skier who won four World cup overall championships. In the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vonn won a gold medal in downhill skiing, the first one for an American woman and in the same year, she received the Laureus Sportswoman of the year award. In 2016, Lindsey won the 20th World Cup crystal globe title, an overall title for both men and women skiers. In 2019, Vonn declared her retirement from the sport due to injuries.

Alex Morgan

Alexandra Morgan Carrasco, born on July 2, 1989, is an American professional soccer player playing for the team San Diego Wave FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Morgan started playing internationally at an early age. She was the youngest player in the FIFA Women’s World Cup team. In the 2012 London Olympics, Morgan won her first gold medal. Morgan continued playing for several national and international events. Recently, in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Morgan scored a goal in a group stage match against Newzealand. 

Other than sports, Morgan has an interest in writing which made her an author. Morgan wrote the Kick series of books for middle school students. The books emphasize the importance of teamwork in soccer.
